How Much Gravel Do You Need for a Driveway?
A gravel driveway is built in layers, and each one needs its own calculation. This guide walks through depth, stone type and weight.

A typical layered driveway
| Layer | Material | Typical depth |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Large crushed stone, often 2 to 4 in pieces | 4 to 6 in |
| Middle | Medium crushed stone, often about 1 in | 3 to 4 in |
| Top | Fine crushed stone with fines, or a decorative gravel | 2 to 3 in |
Names and sizes vary by region and quarry, so describe the job to your supplier and ask what they recommend for each layer. On firm, well-drained ground, a driveway that is only being resurfaced may need just a new top layer.
Crushed stone or round gravel?
Crushed stone has sharp, angular faces that lock together when compacted, which makes a firm surface that stays put. Round stones such as pea gravel and river rock roll under tyres and spread out, so they suit paths and decorative areas better than the structural layers of a driveway.
Worked example
A single-car driveway 50 ft long and 10 ft wide covers 500 sq ft.
| Layer | Depth | Cubic yards | +10% | ≈ Tons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base | 4 in | 6.2 | 6.8 | 9.5 |
| Middle | 4 in | 6.2 | 6.8 | 9.5 |
| Top | 2 in | 3.1 | 3.4 | 4.8 |
That is about 17 cubic yards, or roughly 24 tons, in total. Run your own sizes through the gravel calculator, one layer at a time.
Preparation matters
- Remove topsoil and grass down to firm subsoil. Organic material under gravel rots and causes dips.
- Shape the surface with a slight crown or slope so water runs off instead of pooling.
- Many builders lay a woven geotextile fabric over soft ground to stop the stone sinking into the soil.
- Compact each layer with a plate compactor or roller before adding the next.
Delivery and weight
A cubic yard of crushed stone weighs about 1.4 tons. A typical tandem dump truck carries somewhere between 10 and 15 tons, so the example driveway is about two loads. Ask for the material to be tipped where you can spread it easily, and make sure the truck will not cross septic systems, buried pipes or soft lawn.

Frequently asked questions
How deep should gravel be on a driveway?
New driveways are often built 8 to 12 inches deep in total, in two or three layers. Resurfacing an existing driveway usually needs 2 to 3 inches.
How many tons of gravel for a 100 ft driveway?
A 100 × 10 ft driveway with 10 inches of crushed stone needs about 31 cubic yards, roughly 43 tons, before a compaction allowance.
Do I need fabric under a gravel driveway?
It is not always required, but on clay or soft soils a geotextile fabric helps keep the stone from sinking and mixing with the soil.
