Availability varies by store and region, and some suppliers also stock 54 in or 1350 mm widths for 9 ft and 4.5 m ceilings.

Common thicknesses

ThicknessTypical use
1/4 in (6 mm)Covering old walls, curved surfaces
3/8 in (10 mm)Repairs and overlays
1/2 in (12.5–13 mm)Standard interior walls
5/8 in (16 mm)Fire-rated assemblies, ceilings, sound control

Fire-rated board (often called Type X in North America) is required in some locations, such as between an attached garage and the house. Moisture-resistant board is common in bathrooms and laundries. Your local building code decides what is required.

Bigger sheets, fewer seams

Every joint has to be taped, filled and sanded, often in three coats. On a 12 ft wall, one 4 × 12 sheet per row leaves no end joint, while 4 × 8 sheets leave one in every row. Fewer joints mean less finishing work and a flatter wall. The trade-off is weight: a 4 × 12 sheet of half-inch board is a two-person lift and may not fit up a narrow stairway.

Horizontal or vertical?

On standard-height walls, many installers hang sheets horizontally. It usually means fewer joints, and the long tapered edges meet at a comfortable working height. Taller walls, or commercial work with specific requirements, may use vertical hanging instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common drywall size?

In the US and Canada, 4 × 8 ft sheets of 1/2 inch board are the most common for interior walls.

How heavy is a sheet of drywall?

Weight varies by product and thickness. Standard 1/2 inch 4 × 8 sheets are often in the 50 to 60 lb range, and lightweight boards weigh less. Check the product label.

Can I use 1/2 inch drywall on ceilings?

Many manufacturers make a sag-resistant 1/2 inch ceiling board. Standard 1/2 inch board may sag over wider joist spacing, so check the product rating.
